We all know what is Amazon Echo and it can do. Now Microsoft is all set to take on Amazon Echo & even Google Home. Microsoft is coming up with new speakers. Don’t take it too simple, those are Cortana Powered Speakers. Yes, you heard it right. Microsoft had finally an answer to Echo & Google Home.

If rumors and leaked images are to be believed, Microsoft is planning to introduce new Cortana powered speakers in partnership with Harmon Kardon and other partners. A report on MSPU indicates clearly that this Cortana powered speakers are not far away.

Those who are on latest Insider build, Redstone 3 may have noticed a section called “Devices” in Cortana. Actually, Microsoft is working on an app called “Cortana Device Setup” which will further control the devices by Cortana. The app may be available in the upcoming RS3 Insider builds.

From the above Image, we can see a “Buy Now” button on Cortana, which now redirects to a Microsoft Page. You can check yourself if your PC is running on the First Insider Build of RS3. In future when the speakers are out, we can control them from here. As of now, we don’t have any Cortana Powered device. But take a look at the Screenshots below.

From the above Screenshot, we can understand that something is being cooked in the background by Microsoft and will soon come to light. And the app also contains some voice commands for Skype, Music, Reminder, Weather.

All these leaked Screenshots are pretty Interesting. It’s not far when we have a Cortana Powered Device in our hands. How many of you are excited to see this and wanna try a Cortana Device. Let us know in the comments below.

First build of Redstone 3 is available now for Fast Ring Insiders. And we have another new feature available for Windows 10 with RS3. Actually, it’s not a new feature on Windows, it was available until July 2013, and was pulled back then. Yes, we are talking about the offline support for OneDrive on Windows 10.

Microsoft Watcher Brad Sams had come up with a new post showcasing the animation features of Project Neon. In the post, he has showed a new icon for OneDrive. The new icon may probably indicate files available through OneDrive, but which are not available locally.

Microsoft was in plans for making OneDrive available offline since last October. And was discussed the same on Ignite Conference in a session for One Drive. The company has promised that offline support for OneDrive will soon become available for Windows 10. Microsoft is calling this feature as “On-Demand Sync”. This may soon arrive in the upcoming builds of Redstone 3.

How many of you are waiting for this feature? Let us know in the comments below.

Microsoft surprised all of us by releasing Windows 10 Mobile on March 17th. Wait.. What was the surprise..? Here it is.. Microsoft breaks all its promises and omitted majority of devices running Windows Phone 8.1 to be eligible for Windows 10 Mobile thus resulting about 60% of Windows Phone devices to be stand still on WP8.1

Now lets take a recall.. About Microsoft’s strategy on Windows Phone Update.

Windows Phone 7.0

16

Windows Phone 7 is the first major Mobile OS from Microsoft.  Windows Phone 7 was succeed by their internal OS Windows Phone 6.5. Devices with x1x runs on WP7. And they got updated up to Windows Phone 7.8. Devices like Lumia 510, 610 etc was running WP7.8 and that was the end for these devices. They were not get updated to at least Windows Phone 8.0

Windows Phone 8.0

windows_phone_8

WP8.0 was the first major update from WP7.0. There also Microsoft surprised us by all the possible ways. Not a single device which runs WP7.0/WP7.8 was eligible for this update. Update was all meant for new devices. WP8.0 Starts with devices x2x. Devices like Lumia 520, 620, 720 was running WP8.0 outbox.

Windows Phone 8.0 Update 2: Windows Phone Update 2 also called as Lumia Amber was a small update from WP8.0. This was the default OS for Lumia 625,925,928 & Lumia 1020. With this version Nokia started to name their Firmware in alphabetical order with name of Colors. Lumia Amber was the First one. The famous “Glance Screen” Option was introduced with this version of OS.

Windows Phone 8.0 Update 3: Windows Phone Update 3 or also called as Lumia Black was another update from WP8.0 Update 2. This was the default OS for 525, 1320 and Lumia 1520.

Windows Phone 8.1 OR Lumia Cyan

windows-phone-8.1

Any Windows Phone user will say that Windows Phone 8.1 was the major update for the whole Windows Phone OS. It was also called as Lumia Cyan. It totally changed the way how the OS looks like. Windows Phone 8.1 brings many new features including notification bar. Fortunately all devices running WP8.0 was eligible for the update. Devices with x3x comes with WP8.1 outbox. Microsoft also started “Preview For Developers” with WP8.1. An earlier version to “Windows Insider”. With Preview for Developers app an user can test the early beta version of the OS before the general public release. WP8.1 gets a warm welcome among Windows Phone users.

Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 OR Lumia Denim: This was a small update from Windows Phone 8.1. Many new devices came with this deafult OS. Devices like 730, 830, 735 and Microsoft Lumia 535 came up with this version. Not many visible changes come up with version. This is the version on now majority of Windows Phone devices running. i.e, all the devices that are not eligible for Windows 10 Mobile.

OS version: 8.10.14141.167, 8.10.14147.180, 8.10.14157.200, 8.10.14176.243, 8.10.14192.280, 8.10.14203.206, 8.10.14219.341 or 8.10.14226.359

Windows Phone 8.1 Update 2 OR Lumia Denim

34513_large_Windows_Phone_Update_2_Wide

WP8.1 Update 2 was also called as Denim. This was the default version for x4x series devices. Lumia 640 & 640XL comes outbox with this version. This Update 2 was not widely released for all devices. Only device like Lumia 830, 930 received this update. This is the update what we are asking for. Update 2 has brought some useful changes. Let’s see what Update 2 has brings:

Windows-Phone-81-Update-2-screens

OS version: 8.10.15143.154 or 8.10.15148.160

Official Change Log:

Settings: Find your phone settings more easily. Tap one of the new settings categories to jump to it, use Search to find a setting, or pan down to peruse in the traditional way. Additionally, phone settings can now be pinned to Start.

Name your phone: Give your phone a name without connecting to a PC. Just tap Settings >About > Edit name to name it.

VPN: Now you can use certificates to sign in for L2TP VPN connections. Always-on VPN profiles are now supported too, so you’re automatically and always connected.

Bluetooth: Type with more than your thumbs. Use an external Bluetooth keyboard and watch the words fly on your phone. And now get your text messages straight from your car if it has a compatible Bluetooth system.

App privacy permissions: Now you control whether an app can access your contacts, calendar, camera, microphone and text messages. Just tap Settings > App permissions to get started.

Reset Protection: Provide an extra layer of protection for your phone, so that if it ever ends up in the wrong hands, it can’t be easily reset or re-used. (This feature is available only for specific phones.)

The WP8.1 Update 2 has brought some useful changes. Including Bluetooth Keyboard support, redesign of settings menu, support for .MKV files, double tap on navigation bar to lock(only for on-screen navigation bar devices).

This update should be pushed to devices which are not eligible for Windows 10 Mobile according to Microsoft.

Microsoft Support Lifecycle

Every Windows Product has a life cycle. And thus Windows Phone 8.1 also has a life cycle. According to Microsoft what Lifecycle means that they will support the product and give regular update to the product until lifecycle ends. Lets check the lifecycle for WP8.1

Untitledb

So here’s the Life cycle for Windows Phone 8.1. Start Date: 24/06/2014 and End Date:11/07/2017. There is enough time remaining for WP8.1 Lifecycle to end. Accurately 16 Months. With Windows 10 Mobile released MS will continue support for a small amount of devices. What about other majority of devices out in the market. During the relaese of WP8.1 Microsoft was speaking mouthful about the Lifecycle they have given to the OS. Now not a single word from them.

What to Expect for the blacked out ones

With this we understand that ending Product support all of a sudden is not a new thing for Microsoft. But this have changed. The number of WP8.1 users is very very large comparing to WP7/WP7.8. They are in the middle of the road with no where to go.

As my Heading for this post says, I will/should use the word “CHEATED”. Every single Windows Insider has contributed something to Windows 10 Mobile through feedback app or directly giving reviews. We can clearly say that the decision to omit a large number of devices from eligible update list was not a last minute decision. Why can’t they tell it early that all devices will not be eligible. Just because they want the everything from all Insiders. And promised all WP8.1 devices are eligible for the update. If they announced earlier that all devices are not eligible for the update I bet they will loose 50% of its Insiders. Literally or Practically what Microsoft has done to its Insiders is not acceptable.

“IF YOU ARE A BETA TESTER, YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO OWN ITS FINAL PRODUCT”

Lets Check the devices:

Eligible for Windows 10 Mobile: Lumia 1520, Lumia 930, Lumia 830, Lumia 730, Lumia 735, Lumia 640, Lumia 640XL, Lumia 635 1GB, Lumia 636 1GB, Lumia 638 1GB, Lumia 540, Lumia 535, Lumia 532, Lumia 435, Lumia 430

Not Eligible for Windows 10 Mobile: Lumia 1320, Lumia 1020, Lumia Icon, Lumia 928, Lumia 925, Lumia 925T, Lumia 920, Lumia 920T, Lumia 822, Lumia 820, Lumia 810, Lumia 720, Lumia 720T, Lumia 635 LTE, Lumia 630, Lumia 625, Lumia 620, Lumia 530, Lumia 525, Lumia 520, Lumia 520T

There is a vast 16 months to end the life cycle of WP8.1. So be wise and at least provide WP8.1 Update 2 and gave regular security updates to devices up to July 2017 if you really value your customers OR at least make sure Windows Phone is DEAD.!

Yet another mess from Microsoft. Now Microsoft Brazil shows Lumia 635 as an Upgradable device to Windows 10 Mobile despite of having only 512MB RAM.

Microsoft has released Windows 10 Mobile officially to older devices on March 17th. And more than 60% of Windows Phone devices does not make eligibility to update to W10M. All the 512MB RAM devices and some star studded devices including Lumia 1020 and 920 was omitted from the update for every one’s surprise.

Untitledx

Now Microsoft Brazil has updated its product page and shows a Lumia 635 with 512 RAM is upgradable to W10M. We don’t think it as a mistake as Lumia 630 with 512 is opted out for update by Microsoft Brazil. 1GB RAM Lumia 635 is not available in Brazil.

Earlier another OEM from Microsoft called BLU also claimed that one their device will be updated to W10M despite of getting omitted from Final eligible list. Things are getting really messed up for Windows Phone users now.. What do you think about this claim from Microsoft Brazil.

If all reports are to be believed Microsoft will officially announce Windows 10 Mobile today. It is heard from our sources that there will not be a huge announcement and rather they will cut short the announcement to a blog post. And also we heard that update will be rolling out to selected devices today itself. So here we discuss what are the things you should do before Windows 10 Mobile hits your devices.

  • Backup

Before doing any update keep in mind that you have backed up your important data. We don’t know how our device will react to the new update. If something has gone wrong we should reset the device. So it is better to back up all your data to a safer place. Backup can be done in two ways for Windows Phone.

One Drive

One Drive is the cloud based storage system from Microsoft. An average Windows Phone user should have at least 15GB of capacity on cloud. So backup all your stuffs to One drive. Here’s how to do it –

Head to Settings – Backup

There you can see three options:

apps+settings – If the backup is off turn back up on. Settings & apps backup. this will help you to backup the settings you were using once you have reset the device. Goto manage backups and check when is the last backup your device has done. If its a longer interval then click on backup now and wait until the backup is completed. It will take some time according to your internet connection.

text messages – backup the text messages to one drive if you think you can’t miss that and its very important. Get into that menu and turn backup ON and click backup now. Wait until backup is completed.

photos+videos – for many people problem arise here. Particularly those who are having a very slow internet connection. Many of us will be having a plenty of photos and videos in our device and backing up all these to cloud is a bit difficult. But those who are having a good connection head to photos+videos and turn backup ON and press backup now.

External Source

Now we are done with backup in cloud. Those who don’t want to backup things in cloud can backup it to an external source.

That is backing up your device to a Personal Computer. Only personal stuff can be backed up here. i.e., Photos, Videos & Music. Copy all these to PC by connecting the device via USB Cable.

All these are a precautionary taken if something has happened to the update and then you may have to reset the device.

  • Make enough room for your update

This is a very important thing to do before you update your device.

If there is not enough space in your device the update will fail in between. So to make sure your device has enough space head to Settings – Storage Sense. Check the Free Space on your phone. Make sure you have at least 2.5 GB of free space before you download the update. If its less than that there’s a high chance to fail the update. So move the apps, photos, videos and music to SD Card and make sure you have enough space to download the update. Keep in mind this is very very important.

UPGRADE ADVISOR

Upgrade Advisor is a new tool introduced by Microsoft to help the customers with Windows 10 Update.

So here’s What an Upgrade Advisor can do:

Update Advisor can help check if an update is available for your phone and free up space to get you started. It connects to the network to check for new updates, then helps you free up space for updates by recommending files that you can move to an SD card or OneDrive to make room for the update. After the update is completed, you can move the files back to your phone.

With the Update Advisor app, you can:

  • Move songs, podcasts, pictures and videos to your SD card.
  • Move songs, podcasts, pictures and videos to OneDrive.
  • Delete songs, podcasts, pictures and videos from your phone.

So make sure you have update advisor in your device.

These are the things you should do before the update.

How to update the device

Here we discuss how to update the device after the rolling out of the update. All devices will not show the update right after the announcement. Your device will only check for updates in regular intervals. So in order to get the update right away head to Settings – Update – Check for Updates.

WHEN WILL MY DEVICE GET THE UPDATE

This is an important question for all Windows phone users. Even if Microsoft starts rolling out the update today we are not sure which all devices will get the update.

Here’s the primary list of device that is possibly be updated to Windows 10 Mobile today:

Lumia 430
Lumia 435
Lumia 532
Lumia 535
Lumia 540
Lumia 635 (1 GB RAM)
Lumia 640
Lumia 640 XL
Lumia 735
Lumia 830
Lumia 930

And also there’s something related to Carrier. Vodafone Italy and some other carriers have published the devices eligible for update and when they will get the update. We will discuss this later after the announcement.

Stay Calm and wait for the Biggest Announcement..!! Excited about this.. Let us know in the comments.

Microsoft released a new cumulative update to TH2 Build (10586) for Windows 10 Mobile yesterday bringing the OS Version to 10586.122. The update is only available for Slow and Preview Rings..

Now from the Blog Post notes Microsoft is hinting at the RTM Build of W10M. It advises Insiders to update to this build from WP8.1, so Microsoft can test the upgrade path that customers will be taking from WP8.1

From Microsoft Blog:

“If you’re a Windows Insider who is willing to help test the upgrade path that most customers will be taking from Windows Phone 8.1 – you can use the Windows Device Recovery Tool to go back to Windows Phone 8.1 and then download the Windows Insider app from the Store and jump into either the Slow or Release Preview rings to pick up Build 10586.122 for your phone. Make sure to send feedback on any issues you encounter through the upgrade process or after the upgrade completes. We appreciate Insiders helping us test out the upgrade from Windows Phone 8.1 to help ensure our customers have a great experience.”

But yesterday we have reported a leak of a higher TH2 Build bringing the OS Version to 10586.164. We are not sure is .122 is the RTMed Build or will they again release cumulative update to bring the OS to .164. Anyway the app list bug is still not fixed on 10586.164. So they may be trying to fix this with another cumulative update before GR of W10M. We are also not sure 10586.164 will be pushed to Insiders.

Its all in the hands of Microsoft..
